Ella Marie Rast, 83 died Friday October 25, 2013 of a sudden heart attack while gardening at her home.

Ella was born on December 22, 1929 to Edward and Emma Ruff Rast in American Falls, Idaho.  She attended Mt. Hope School in Pleasant Valley and graduated from American Falls High School.  Ella became a registered nurse after completing the program at Good Samaritan Hospital in Portland, Oregon.  She married Paul Hunter and moved to California.

Ella later returned to Idaho and worked at American Falls and Bannock Memorial Hospitals.  After several years she returned to Portland and continued her nursing career.  During her years in Portland Ella enjoyed outdoor activities, rental property investment, writing and spending time with family.

Upon retirement from nursing she returned to American Falls and later to Pocatello.  Ella was active in painting, hiking, gardening, writing, and was a life-long learner.  She was a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Pocatello, the Pocatello Art Center and the Idaho Watercolor Society. Ella published two books, one on local history and another on immigration of Germans from Russia.

Ella is survived by sister Elaine Havlicak of American Falls; brother Harold Rast of Gales Creek, OR; daughter Dianne Aparicio of Sugar Land, TX; son Paul (Hank) Hunter of Richland, WA;  and six grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM Friday November 1, 2013 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in American Falls.  Visitation will be at 10:00 AM.

Ella was a long-time member of Idaho Writer's League. Some of the members wanted to attend the funeral, but I was the only one who could, and I needed someone else to drive me. So sorry to miss hearing the many good things that I am sure will be said about Ella there. We so much enjoyed knowing her, advising her through her book, The Whole Damn Thing, as well as her stories about her immigrant ancestors. Her story about being snowed in for a long time was a gem. She was a very talented woman, and we missed her when health problems kept her from attending meetings.

My condolences to Ella's family. She made many contributions to the Pocatello Community and she will be missed. I knew Ella through the Senior Center and NKA. She often enjoyed dressing colorfully, and had such a happy smile when comments were made. I enjoyed her artwork, some of which hangs near our Mayor's Office.

I only met Ella about 5 years ago, at a book club. I found her to be full of life, intelligent, and very intuitive. I enjoyed her paintings and her book about the American Falls dam. I was greatly saddened to hear of her passing. She was truly an Idaho Gem.
