Michael Jon Hoopes, 77, of Rockland, Idaho, peacefully passed from this life September 29th. He was born February 29, 1948 in Afton, Wyoming. He was devoted to sharing his love and appreciation for music with his family and close friends. He worked as a taxi driver, a card dealer in Jackpot, a school teacher, a band teacher, and the Technology Coordinator for the Cassia School District. Michael enjoyed singing in the church choir and was honored when asked and able to lead the choir at the dedication of the Boise Idaho Temple in 1984. That is a further testament to his dedication to music and sharing it with others.
He is survived by his loving wife, Margene Hoopes; his children: Shanille (Mark) Moosman, Jennilyn (Rob) Flook, Jonathon J (Summer) Hoopes, Joyanna Hoopes Gold, Michael Ryan (Angela) Hoopes, Aaron Wayne (Shelia) Hoopes, and Adam Wayne (Kim) Hoopes. He is also survived by Margene’s children: Sean (Shaylynn) Tomkinson, Kory (Jeanette) Tomkinson, Jason (Kim) Tomkinson, DeVon (Kristie) Tomkinson, Jamie (Ashley) Smith, and Jared (Shalissa) Tomkinson.
Michael leaves behind his brothers, Jerry (D-Ann) and Blaine; sisters, Cheryl (Jay) Powell, Judy (Bob) Womack, Carol Bentley, and Carla Hoopes; 53 grandchildren; and 27 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Julian Wayne Hoopes and Lavon Bonnie Calton, and by his first wife, Vicki Lynn Jensen.
Michael grew up on a large chicken farm in Willard, Utah. He played multiple instruments in his high school band. He served his mission in Bronx and Queens, New York. He married his first wife Vicki Lynn on May 1, 1969, and they had 7 kids together. He later married Margene Tomkinson on November 10, 2012.
Michael was known for his quick wit and his silly dad jokes. He loved to play golf and was an avid LA Dodgers fan. He shared his love for music with his classical guitar playing and everyone was drawn to listen. He shared his love for classical jazz with his children. He sang in the Barber Shop Quartet in Burley, Idaho. Michael enjoyed playing his guitar with friends in Pocatello in his later years.
Services will be held Wednesday, October 8th at the Rockland LDS Church, located at 405 E Shoshone St, Rockland, Idaho. The viewing will be from 9:45am to 10:45am, with the funeral following at 11am.
