Richard Bennett Alston

Richard Bennett Alston, affectionately known as "Rick" and for his awesome smile, peacefully passed away on August 12, 2026 at the Idaho State Veterans Home in Pocatello, Idaho. Richard was born May 4, 1944, in American Falls, Idaho, the second child of Edwin and Ethel Alston.

When Richard was 11 years old, the family moved to Utah. From an early age, he had a curious mind and loved figuring out how things worked. He enjoyed building model cars, tinkering with electronics, and listening to music. Interests that would stay with him throughout his life. Richard proudly served in the Air Force from June 1965 to August 1987 as an electrical engineer. During his military career, he was stationed in California, Canada, Hawaii, Japan and Grand Forks, North Dakota. While stationed in California, Rick met the love of his life, Elfie Bartz. They married and spent 52 wonderful years together before Elfie passed away in 2019. Richard and Elfie were blessed with three children: Erik, Hiedi and Christian. They also have five grandchildren. After his military service, Richard continued working for the Air Force as a civilian, working with the electrical and maintenance department. After leaving civil service for the Air Force, he continued his career as an electrical engineer at Atru Hospital in Grand Forks, North Dakota. Richard was a man who enjoyed keeping busy and following his many interests. He loved flying large remote-control planes, taking long rides on his variety of bicycles, and tinkering with electronics and, of course, music. He enjoyed all genres of music with Alan Jackson being a particular favorite.

Richard is survived by his three children: Erik (Stephanie) Sqnoqualmie, Washington, Hiedi Kunde (Ben) Arlington, Texas and Christian (Amy) Olympia. Washington as well his five grandchildren. He is also survived by his siblings: Judy Legler of Arizona, Shari Yerbich (Ray) of Pocatello and Tim (Marcie) of Pocatello. Richard lived a life filled with service, family, curiosity and music. The unique way he enjoyed life will be missed by all who knew him. Rest easy, Richard (Rick). Give Elfie and your parents a big hug from all of us. We know they have been waiting for you. 

The family would like to extend their heartfelt  gratitude to everyone at the Idaho State Veterans Home Pocatello who cared for Richard. He was treated with love, kindness and respect. His days were better because you cared. We will forever be grateful to you.
