Verna Simons

POCATELLO, IDAHO – Our cherished wife, mother, grandmother, and sister was called home to her Heavenly Father on Friday, February 21, 2014. She left this Earth for a joyous reunion with her beloved husband, son, parents, siblings and loved ones.

Verna was born June 17, 1928 in Neeley, Idaho to James Oscar Payne and Syvella Harris Payne. She was the ninth of ten children, all of whom she adored greatly.

Verna married Max Simons on October 1, 1948 in Pocatello, Idaho. Their marriage was later solemnized on June 11, 1954 in the Idaho Falls Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. They spent nearly 50 happy years together and could often be found smooching in the kitchen. To this union were born three children: Carolyn (John) Johnson, Bandera TX, Marsha Layton, Pocatello ID, and the late Grant (Diane) Simons, Pocatello ID. In 1970 Farel Vic Simons was gathered into the family, and was later sealed to Max and Verna on December 27, 1979 in the Idaho Falls Temple. Verna and Max were involved in the Foster Care Program and provided a home to more than 40 children. To this day, many still call her mom.

Verna was actively involved in community and religious service all her life, primarily through the LDS Church. She served faithfully in many callings throughout her life. She loved her Savior.

Verna was an avid reader, enjoyed music (particularly country), family and going out to lunch. She will be remembered fondly for her boisterous, contagious laugh, especially at a funny movie or while telling stories with her sisters.

Verna was immediately adored by anyone who met her. She was everyone’s grandma, always ready with loving words and you couldn’t get away without a hug. She was a perfect example of unconditional love and warmth. Her influence will be felt for generations and she will be truly missed. We wouldn’t trade you for a million bucks Grandma!

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband Max, parents, son Grant, and her siblings. She is survived by her children, Carolyn, Marsha, Farel, 5 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, and her loyal “little dog” Pepper.

A viewing will be held at the LDS Ward Bld at 4010 Hawthorne Rd in Pocatello from 10:00-11:30 am, the funeral will follow at 11:30 am. Tuesday February 25, 2014.  Interment will be in the Neeley Cemetery. A luncheon will be served for all family and friends at the same LDS church Building, at 4010 Hawthorne Rd in Pocatello, starting at 2:30 pm.  Condolences and memories may be shared at www.davisrosemortuary.com.
